Welcome to the Mary Louise Curtis Branch

Our Mary Louise Curtis (MLC) branch is the oldest and largest branch of Settlement Music School. Before the School expanded beyond its Settlement House roots to multiple branches in the ‘40s and ‘50s, MLC was the first and only branch of Settlement Music School. More than 50% of MLC’s current student body is of Asian descent, which is representative of several of the neighboring communities in South Philadelphia.

Each year, MLC hosts 65+ student performances, 150+ meetings and workshops, 120+ community partner events and 15 artist master classes. It is also the primary site for the Rhythm n’ Brews Community Drum Circle and Social Hour and it is home to our award-winning Kaleidoscope Preschool and After-School Program.

“Settlement Music School is a place of growth. A place where strangers become friends. A place to learn and have new experiences. A great place for community building and making real connections. I like to think of the doors to our branch as the great equalizer. When students enter the building, the roadblocks which society put in their way, such as financial circumstances, are removed, and no matter what neighborhood they travel from to get here, they all have an equal opportunity to learn and grow, not just as musicians, but as people.” Kris Rudzinski, Branch Director
