Fran Berge performs widely on both historical and modern instruments. She is a member of Tempesta di Mare and the Phoenix Ensemble and she performs frequently with the Fairmount Chamber Ensemble, The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, Opera Philadelphia, Orchestra 2001, Melomanie, the Washington Bach Consort and the Carmel Bach Festival. Fran studied at the University of Michigan, Northwestern University, and Temple University. Principal teachers have included violist Karen Tuttle, Baroque violinists Marilyn McDonald, Stanley Ritchie, and Elizabeth Wallfisch. Through the EEFC and on the Greek island of Naxos, she has also learned a considerable repertoire of Romanian and Greek folk music by ear. She loves to teach and coach chamber music at all levels, which she does at Haverford College and Germantown Friends School as well as Settlement. When not playing music, Fran likes to be out kayaking in the Pine Barrens or camping in the mountains.
