Community Voices

An Audience at our Mary Louise Curtis Branch

In the spring of 2022...

We invited members of the Mary Louise Curtis Branch community to express what Settlement Music School means to them. Together, they came up with universal themes, now featured on the backs of new chairs in Presser Hall. To learn more about each value and see what MLC community members had to say in their own words, please click on the tabs below.

Community Voices Plaques: Collaboration, Community, Diversity, Education, Expression, Growth, Legacy, Joy, Opportunity, and Trust

What languages are featured, and why? We chose the languages for the plaques based on community responses to the prompt “How do you say music at home?” This survey, offered both in person at the branch and online, had responses in 21 languages, not including English.

We chose to add an additional six languages, based on what is most popularly spoken in this area of Philadelphia and also based on our knowledge of other languages spoken by community members who attend the Mary Louise Curtis branch.
