Matthew Clayton joins Settlement as Kardon-Northeast Branch Director
One of the newest members of our Settlement family, Kardon-Northeast Branch Director Matthew Clayton, was featured in the Northeast Times!
Matthew is from the Philadelphia area and is a saxophonist, educator, administrator, and composer. Most recently, Matthew was the Director of Jazz Combos at the University of Pennsylvania for eight years where he directed, taught, and was the administrator for the Penn Jazz Combos programs. He also taught private saxophone lessons at Penn and was a faculty member at the Nelly Berman School of Music for 10 years. He is a lecturer at Princeton teaching a jazz history course — Music/African American Studies 262, Jazz History: “Many Sounds, Many Voices.” He is also an active performer and has a strong musical foundation in gospel music. Matthew received his B.A. in Music from Yale, and his A.M. and Ph.D. from Harvard in Ethnomusicology – his dissertation was titled “M-Base: Envisioning Change for Jazz in the 1980s and Beyond.”
