Fran Berge has performed widely on both historical and modern instruments. She was a founding member of the Fairmount String Quartet, a member of Tempesta di Mare Baroque Chamber Orchestra for many years, and performed frequently with The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, Opera Philadelphia, Orchestra 2001, the Philly Pops, Melomanie, the Washington Bach Consort, and the Carmel Bach Festival. Principal string teachers included violinist Eduardo Fiorelli and Angel Reyes, violist Karen Tuttle and Baroque violinists Stanley Richie, Marilyn McDonald, and Elizabeth Wallfisch. She really enjoys teaching and at Haverford College, she specializes in teaching Baroque performance practice.
Fran has a deep interest in the broader aspects of sound in our lives: the science of hearing and listening, the relationship between language and music, and the sociology of music ensembles. Through the Eastern European Folklife Center and on the Greek island of Naxos, she has also learned a considerable repertoire of Romanian and Greek folk music by ear. She loves to teach and coach chamber music at all levels. When not playing music, Fran likes to be out kayaking or camping in the mountains.
