Matthew Clayton joined Settlement Music School in September 2020. Matthew is from the Philadelphia area and is a saxophonist, educator, administrator, and composer. Before coming to Settlement, Matthew was the Director of Jazz Combos at the University of Pennsylvania for eight years where he directed, taught, and was the administrator for the Penn Jazz Combos programs. He also taught private saxophone lessons at Penn and is a saxophone faculty member at the Nelly Berman School of Music. He is a lecturer at Princeton teaching a jazz history course — Music/African American Studies 262, “Jazz History: Many Sounds, Many Voices.” He is also an active performer and has a strong musical foundation in gospel music. Matthew has commercially released two albums – On the Move and Prophetic Dreams – with his own music label, Sound Beacon LLC.  Matthew received his B.A. in Music from Yale, and his A.M. and Ph.D. from Harvard in Ethnomusicology – his dissertation was titled “M-Base: Envisioning Change for Jazz in the 1980s and Beyond.”
