Teresa Cappello began her association with Settlement at the Germantown Branch as a 16 year old piano student of the late Irene Beck. Her teachers have included Jacques Voois, Jeanne Behrend and Lambert Orkis. After graduating from West Chester University with a B.S. in Music Education, Teresa obtained both Montessori and Dalcroze certificates and taught and developed music programs utilizing the Montessori philosophy. After completing graduate music therapy studies at Hahneman University, Teresa worked as a board certified music therapist with various populations, including persons with autism, developmental disabilities and adults living with mental health issues. She has also enjoyed being an accompanist and rehearsal pianist for regional musical theater and dance studios in the Philadelphia area. As a former accompanist for both the SMS Children’s Choir and Kardon Chorale, she collaborated in a music therapy study involving the first intergenerational choir between the school and the Germantown Home for Older Adults. Teresa presented the results of this study at a National Music Therapy Association conference in the early 2000s. Teaching piano to children, particularly those with special needs, has always been at the heart of her profession. Her other interests include antique shopping and flea marketing. She shares a home with her jazz bassist partner, Dennis, and their senior cat, Olivia.
