Settlement Connections Across the Miles

One of the many strengths of Settlement Music Online is its ability to connect musicians beyond the Philadelphia region, creating meaningful artistic collaborations no matter where students call home.

Recently, Doris Hamilton, a Settlement Music Online voice student, and Gary Thompson, a voice student at the Germantown Branch, had the opportunity to perform together in New York City. Both study with faculty member Sharon Neff, who helped bring the collaboration to life when Gary, a Pennsylvania resident with longtime ties to New York City’s Marble Collegiate Church, was searching for a vocalist for a concert program titled Harvest Time. Sharon connected him with Doris, who lives in New York City and was happy to join the performance.

The connection was especially meaningful, as Doris began her musical studies at Settlement’s Wynnefield Branch before moving to New York for work. For both performers, their shared Settlement connection made the experience even more special. As Gary noted, “Having the Philadelphia connection was great, but our Settlement Music School connection was the icing on the cake.”

Reflecting on the experience, Doris described the collaboration beautifully: “It was a truly wonderful moment of connection!”

We love seeing how Settlement students, both near and far, continue to inspire one another through music!
