Flute
The only woodwind instrument without a reed.
Unlike their cousins in the single reed and double reed families, flutes do not need a thin piece of wood in the mouthpiece in order to make a sound. Instead, air is blown across the mouthpiece while the player opens and closes a series of holes along the instrument’s body to manipulate the pitch. Flutes are some of the oldest instruments we know of, with early examples made out of hollow animal bones.
